The League of Young Communists USA, proudly celebrates June 1st as International Children’s Day. The holiday signifies the Communist and Progressive Movement’s drive toward a peaceful world where the well-being of our world’s youth is valued above war and exploitation.
At the 1925 World Conference for the Well-Being of Children, held in Geneva, it was proclaimed that June 1st would be celebrated as International Children’s Day. In 1949, the international communist-led Women’s International Democratic Federation in Moscow declared June 1st to be the International Day for Protection of Children.
In the year 2025, the need to continue the legacy of International Children’s Day is as relevant as ever. Globally, there are at least 1.2 billion children living in poverty and 333 million of those in extreme poverty. These children deal with malnourishment, poor access to education and healthcare, are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless, and are increasingly becoming victims of endless wars around the world.
Meanwhile, capitalism and imperialism in particular is producing record breaking economic inequality worldwide. The world has nearly 3.2 thousand billionaires and 1 percent of the population owning nearly half of the world’s total wealth. It bears mentioning that much of this wealth is extracted through warmongering of the western imperialist bloc with 55 percent of world spending being the war budgets of the NATO countries, especially that of the United States.
The League of Young Communists USA continues to uphold the peace-loving legacy of the Soviet Union and the world communist movement in pushing for a society which would be free of child poverty and free of war!
